Simple Hats

This is a very simple hat pattern based off of the Red Heart Team Cheers Ear-Flap pattern. This pattern can be worked in continuous rounds, joining with a SLST after Round 16 (18 for M/L). It can also be worked each round as its own row, joining with a SLST and then CH 1 at the end of each round.

Materials

  • Any worsted weight yarn in whatever color(s) you prefer
  • Size J-10 Crochet Hook (or whatever size is needed to obtain the correct gauge)
  • Stitch Marker (optional for marking start of round)

Gauge

Rounds 1-4 = 4”

Stitches Used

CH – Chain
SLST – Slip Stitch
SC – Single Crochet
HDC – Half Double Crochet
SC2TOG – Insert hook through next stitch and draw through a loop. Repeat on the next stitch so that there are 3 loops on the hook. Yarn over and pull through all 3 loops on the hook.

Sizes

The pattern has the stitches for the XS hat in bold/black. Other sizes are in brackets and are designated like this: [S#, M#, L#].

Approximate diameters are:
Extra Small - 17-18”
Small - 19-20”
Medium - 21-22”
Large - 23-24”

The size will vary with the yarn used and if the gauge is off. The Large makes a great “one size fits most”.

Main Part of Hat

Make a Magic Ring (or Adjustable Ring) OR CH 3 and connect with a SLST to form a ring

Round 1: 9 [S10, M11, L12] HDC in Ring

Round 2: 2 HDC in each HDC (18 [S20, M22, L24] stitches)

Round 3: **HDC in next HDC; 2 HDC in next HDC** Repeat from ** to ** to end of round (27 [S30, M33, L36] stitches)

Round 4: **HDC in next 2 HDC; 2 HDC in next HDC** Repeat from ** to ** to end of round (36 [S40, M44, L48] stitches)

Round 5: **HDC in next 3 HDC; 2 HDC in next HDC** Repeat from ** to ** to end of round (45 [S50, M55, L60] stitches)

Round 6: **HDC in next 4 HDC; 2 HDC in next HDC** Repeat from ** to ** to end of round (54 [S60, M66, L72] stitches)

Rounds 7-16 (XS/S) [7-18 (M/L)]: HDC in each HDC

Join with a SLST after the last Round

For Beanie:

Round 17 (XS/S) [19 (M/L)]: SC in each stitch, join with a SLST

Fasten off and weave in ends

Alternate Beanie (with turned-up bottom):

Join with a SLST after the last Round

Round 21 (XS/S) [24 (M/L)]: In FLO, SC in each stitch, join with a SLST

Round 22-25 (XS/S) [25-30 (M/L)]: CH 1, SC in each stitch, join with a SLST

Fasten off and weave in ends

Fold up at FLO Round

Row 25 [27]: CH 1; Turn. SC in next 4 [6] SC

For XS/S Only:

Row 26: CH 1; Turn. SC in next SC, SC2TOG, SC (3 stitches)

Row 27: CH 1, Turn. SC in each SC (3 stitches)

Fasten off and weave in ends

For M/L Only

Row 26: CH 1; Turn. SC2TOG, SC in next 2 SC, SC2TOG

Row 27: CH 1, Turn. SC in next 4 SC

Row 28: CH 1; Turn, SC in next SC, SC2TOG, SC (3 stitches)

Row 29: CH 1, Turn. SC in each SC (3 stitches)

Fasten off and weave in ends.

For 2nd Flap:

With Outside of Hat facing you, Skip 12 [14] stitches and repeat rows 17-27 [19-29]

Fasten off and weave in ends ONLY if trimming in a different color

Trim with 2 rows of SC around entire hat (including flaps). At corners of flaps, SC, CH 1, SC in same stitch.

Fasten off and weave in ends.

Braids

  • Cut 12 strands approximately 24” long (if using 2 colors, 6 strands of each; if using 3 colors; 4 strands of each)
  • Divide into 6 bunches (2 strands per bunch; 3 bunches per flap)
  • Loop through spaces between stitches at the end of the flaps. There should be 4 strands for each bunch
  • Braid together and tie off at end.
  • Repeat for other side, taking care that both braids are the same length.

Pom-Pom (option for either hat)

  • Wrap yarn around 4 fingers 20 or 30 times (use more wraps for a fuller pom-pom)
  • Tie a length of yarn around the middle of the loops (leave extra for attaching)
  • Snip ends of loops.
  • Fluff pom-pom
  • Attach to top of hat

Ribbing (option for Beanie)

Add 3-4 rows (or more depending on desired length of hat). Crochet dc in each stitch, alternating front loops only and back loops only (i.e., all odd stitches front loop only, all even stitches back loop only). Join with slst between rounds. Fasten off and weave in ends.
