Northern Lights Throw

This was inspired by my oldest nephew who, when asked what color(s) he liked, said “blues and Northern Lights colors.”  I knew I wanted something with a wave.  Many of the patterns I found just didn’t look right.  The one ripple pattern I found that looked good just would not work for me.  So, I went to the drawing board.  The result is an easy to work wave, with a rippled texture as well.  The slanted sides were a bit of a happy accident that I thought looked neat, and made a unique looking blanket.

          

Supplies

  • H-8 (5mm) Crochet Hook
  • Stitch Markers
  • Yarn Needle
  • Lion Brand Landscapes - Blue Lagoon (Apple Orchard will work, too) - [≅24] balls (147 yards per ball)

Gauge

Not overly critical, but 4 rows is about 2”; one repeat is about 4” (about ≅6 rows per ball)

For a Gauge Swatch

CH 34 and work 2 repeats of the * to * sections.  Work 4-5 rows.

Finished Dimensions

Approximately 50” by 65”

Special Stitch

DC2TOG - YO; insert Hook in next ST and pull up a loop; YO and draw through 2 loops; Repeat; Draw through all 3 remaining loops.

Notes:

  • CH 2 at the start of each row does NOT count as a stitch.
  • Add/Subtract multiples of 13 to make the throw wider/narrower
  • After the first 3 DCs, Odd rows will begin with the Decreases (DC2TOG); Even rows will begin with the Increases (2 DC in next)

Instructions:

CH 203 - Use Stitch Markers to help you keep count.  Every 20 or 50, or whatever works best for you.  I also find it helpful to mark the start and ending stitch of each row.

Row 1 - DC in 3rd CH from Hook. DC in next 2 CHs.  *DC2TOG 3 times; DC, 2 DC in next, DC, 2DC in next, DC, 2DC in next, DC*

Repeat * to * until last 3 CHs (15 times).

DC in last 3 CHs. Turn.  (201 STs in combination of DC and DC2TOG)

Row 2 - CH 2; DC in 1st 3 STs.  *DC, 2 DC in next, DC, 2DC in next, DC, 2DC in next, DC; DC2TOG 3 times*

Repeat * to * until last 3 CHs (15 times).

DC in last 3 CHs. Turn.  (201 STs in combination of DC and DC2TOG)

Row 3 - CH 2; DC in 1st 3 STs.  *DC2TOG 3 times; DC, 2 DC in next, DC, 2DC in next, DC, 2DC in next, DC*

Repeat * to * until last 3 CHs (15 times).

DC in last 3 CHs. Turn.  (201 STs in combination of DC and DC2TOG)

Repeat Rows 2-3 until about 65” long (≅ 120 rows) or desired length.  DO NOT fasten off.

Edging - SC evenly across all sides, working 3 SC in the corners.  Fasten off.

Weave in ends.

2021 Already?!?

My goodness, where has the time gone? I'm glad this horrid year is over for so many reasons! I hope everyone managed to stay free of COVID-19.  We sure did!  For the most part, we're still hunkered down, and will probably stay that way until we can get the vaccine. We did have some good things happen this year, though! First, we were able to take a trip to Alaska to visit family up there.  The circumstances behind the trip weren't ideal, but we were glad to finally be able to take a real vacation, and we had an amazing time.  My brother and sister-in-law were awesome tour guides, and we can't wait to go back! Second, we were able to get a new-to-us car.  Found a great deal on a 2000 Kia Sportage 4dr with very low miles that we dubbed "Squig."  A few things to be fixed, but mostly convenience things, and to be expected on a 20 year old vehicle.  The motorcycle will still be my primary commute vehicle,  but Squig will be a great backup for my Skye. A new year, a new endeavor!

Welcome to Those Yarn Hookers! I created this blog for several reasons. To have a place to post my crochet patterns for the world to see; a place to write my musings, share my favorite memes, and discuss yarning; but most of all, to share my love and passion for crochet! My Mom was an avid crocheter, among other things. She tried to teach me several times while I was growing up, but I never had that “aha!” moment, and could never do more than a chain. A few years ago, my husband was away from home (an out of town trip with friends that I couldn’t attend due to work, I think), and I was feeling extra depressed and missing my mom. Somehow, I had ended up at the Joann website, and was browsing crochet stuff. A few clicks later, I had some yarn, hooks, and a For Dummies (my favorite books for learning anything!) book ordered. A couple of weeks later, we were out for a yarning and coffee date with some friends, and it happened. The “aha!” moment where everything came together.

2020 so far...

So, 2020...What can I say? It's been interesting so far... Hard for me to believe this little project of mine has been around a year already. When I started this endeavor, I had intended to do weekly blog posts, with accompanying posts and memes on the Facebook page. But, it has been slow going for me, especially with the events of the last 1/4 of 2019. And, now the insanity caused by COVID-19 has everything up in the air. Many people are working from home. My company is preparing to, but our situation is a little more complicated than others, so it's taking more time.  The thing that has me most concerned is the selfishness I'm seeing. I'm honestly more concerned that I'm not going to to be able to get the things my family needs to survive than I am about getting sick. I talked with a neighbor yesterday, and he said most places are still out of most things. And, since we don't have a car, we rely on delivery services, which makes shopping for supplies even hard
