Go-Green Market Bag

Orignal pattern can be found at http://suzies-yarnie-stuff.blogspot.com/2008/05/june-go-green-market-bag.html

I copied it into a Google doc for my own convenience, and reposted here.

Paper or plastic? The answer is neither, GO GREEN by crocheting a reusable market bag. Would also make a great beach bag. What other uses can you think of? Instructions are included for over the shoulder straps, or a shorter version for over the arm.

NOTES:

  1. Read instructions all the way through before beginning.
  2. Treble Crochet V stitch = treble, chain 1, treble (tr, ch 1, tr)
  3. When working the joining slipstitch pull the stitch tight. That way you won’t be tempted to work into it next time around.
  4. If your gauge is larger than stated, 5 ounces may not be enough to finish bag. So make your first one out of a 7 ounce skein.
  5. Be sure to change to the H hook for working rounds 16-21, this gives your bag a stable top.
  6. You can make the Go Green Market Bag without the CD, it will be less structured if you choose to leave it out.

MATERIALS:

  • Worsted weight yarn, approximately 5 oz.
  • CD for base of bag (optional)
  • H (5.0mm) and J (6.0 mm) crochet hooks

Fasten off, weave ends into back of work.

INSIDE BASE:

VARIATION – POCKET MARKET BAG

This variation is my modification of the original pattern.

For this variation, you will omit the CD in the base.

For each base piece, work 5 rounds instead of 4. (60 sts)

Round 6: sc through both pieces for 45 sts. sc in the last 15 sts on ONE piece only. Join with slipstitch in first SC.

Work the rest of the bag as normal (for a total of 22 rounds instead of 21).

Add a button and a loop (optional). The base now can be used as a pocket for the market bag for easier storage.

VARIATION - LARP CLASS SASH/THROWIE BAG

This variation is also my modification of the original pattern. A handy bag for use during LARP games for throwing weapons and small game items. The wide shoulder strap also doubles as a class sash.

Only Crochet One Base (include R5) and work bag up to R17 as normal, repeat R17 three more times for 20 total rounds.

Row 21-??: sc or hdc in enough stitches to be approximately 2 inches wide. Repeat until the sash portion is desired length and attach to the other side.
