Mom's Afghan

My mom was an avid crocheter.  Most of my memories of her include yarn or thread.  I have the last afghan that she made before she got sick.  I think it’s 25-30 years old at this writing. I’m not sure if this was her own design, or if it was worked from a pattern, but I knew I had to recreate this at least once.  This pattern is what I was able to figure out, short of taking it apart, which I don’t want to do.

I’m not sure of the brand or color names that she used.  I used Red Heart Super Saver for my recreation, using Shaded Dusk for Color A and Country Blue for Color B.

Materials:

Size H-8 (5 mm) crochet hook, or size needed for gauge
Worsted Weight (medium, 4) Yarn in 2 colors

  • 710 yards (3 skeins) of Color A - Variegated (or another Solid)
  • 1185 yards (about 3 ¼ skeins) of Color B - Solid

Yarn needle

Size:

Gauge:  4 DC = 1.5-2 inches, 3 DC rows = 1.5-2 inches, but is not overly critical

Finished Size (without fringe): Approximately 44 inches wide (measured from the middle as the ends will be wider) by 66” inches long

To make wider, add 14 CH to the starting chain for every block of 7 DC added

To make longer, add rows in groups of 8, continuing to change colors every 4 rows, ending with Color A for the last group of 4.

Note that the first and last rows will have a slight curved/ruffled look due to the additional stitches in the starting chain and in the final row.  This is intentional.

Stitches and Terms Used:

CH – chain
DC – double crochet
ST(s) – stitch(es)
SK - skip
SLST – slip stitch

Start with Color A

CH 162

Row 1: DC in 4th CH from hook, DC in every CH to end. 1st 3 CH counts as 1 DC (159 DC)

Rows 2-4: CH 3 (counts as 1 DC).  DC in next 6 DC. **CH 1, SK 1 DC, DC in next 7 DC**  Repeat ** to ** to end (140 DC, 19 CH)

Row 5: CH 4 (counts as 1 DC, CH 1).  DC in 3rd DC **SK 1 ST, DC in next DC, CH 1**  Repeat ** to ** to end. (80 DC, 79 CH)

Change to Color B

Note: When changing colors, you can fasten off, or you can drop the unused color, and carry it up the side for the next use.

Rows 6-9: Repeat Rows 2-5

NOTE: For Row 6 and its repetitions, even numbered stitches are worked in CH’s and odd numbered stitches are worked in DC’s.  The last 2 DC’s will be worked into the 4th and 3rd STs of the turning CH of the previous row.

Change to Color A

Rows 10-13: Repeat Rows 6-9

Rows 14-105 (or to desired length): Continue Repeating Rows 6-9, changing colors after each repeat, ending with Color B for rows 102-105. (See chart below)
